MarketMobile brings fresh, healthy and affordable food to Laroche Park

Every second Wednesday evening, Mechanicsville residents have been heading to Laroche Park to shop at Ottawa’s grocery store on wheels.


Market Mobile is a project started by several community health centres in Ottawa to help ensure that residents are getting food that is both healthy and affordable.

Many more families will have an opportunity to purchase fresh and affordable food, now that the MarketMobile will be hitting new neighbourhoods across the city.


The mobile grocery store, which offers convenience and lower prices for those living in certain areas of the city, has expanded its operations, organizers announced on June 17.neighbourhoods.

A mobile food market that offers low-income neighbourhoods a chance to purchase healthy food at a reasonable price just got a big financial boost. 


MarketMobile, an initiative of the Poverty and Hunger Working Group, was selected as the recipient of a $125,000 grant from the Community Foundation of Ottawa- a non-profit organization that finds funding for worthy community causes.

Ottawa Public Health launched a new “MarketMobile Bus” food delivery program Saturday to get affordable fruit and vegetables to communities the city says have limited access to fresh produce.


The six-month pilot program arrived at Morrison Gardens off Pinecrest Road in the city’s west end in the form of a rented OC Transpo bus packed with fresh fruit and vegetables.

Residents in four Ottawa communities will now have improved access to healthy foods thanks to an innovative new mobile produce bus project. The MarketMobile pilot project will use a chartered OC Transpo bus to bring affordable fruit and vegetables to Ottawa neighbourhoods with limited access to fresh produce. The MarketMobile will visit four communities – Morrison Gardens, Caldwell, Hunt Club East and Vars - on Saturdays on a rotational basis from July 26 until the end of December.


The MarketMobile is an initiative of the Poverty and Hunger Working Group, in collaboration with multiple public, private and community partners including Ottawa Public Health, the Coalition of Community Health and Resource Centres, Ottawa Community Housing, Loblaws Rideau and community members.
